While obvious thought for women’s traditional clothing is a saree in its
various draping styles, women in India have come a long way in styling out
traditional outfits into ethnic wear. Variants in traditional Indian women
styles can best be watched during festival season in India. We bring here top 5
traditional style for women:
1. Saree: Draped in various styles
depending on the region and runs 5 metres in length worn with matching blouse.
North Indians pull over the pallu from back and let it loose on chest while South
Indians throw pallu over left shoulder by bringing the loose end of pallu from
around the waist. Some communities tie knots at back of saree which shows up
like a beautiful floral design.
2. Salwar Kameez: the origins are from
Punjab region and consist of three pieces. The pants like garment, the kurta
and a dupatta. This has undergone many variations in terms of deign which is
splashes with a dash of westernised influence, an ethnic wear for young girls
of 21st Century.
3. Churidar kurta: slight variation of
Salwar Kameez, this is also most preferred formal wear for official and casual
events. The choice includes optional sleeves, dupatta, prints and fabric.
4. Ghagra Choli: traditionally worn by
women in Rajasthan and Punjab, Ghagra choli consists of tight blouse, odhani
and a long pleated skirt. The blouse has deep neck and short sleeves while the
skirt is embellished with mirrors, embroidery or thick borders. This type of
dressing is usually seen in marriages and folk dances.
5. Mekhela Sador: A traditional Assamese
dress consisting of three portions, Mekhela- a wide cylindrical cloth folded
into pleats from waist and tucked in. Sador- upper portion of garment is a long
cloth tucked on upper portion of Mekhela and rest of the portion draped to
cover rest of the body. Third piece- Riha is worn under Sador which is known
for their exclusive patterns.
